AQUIFERS REHABILITATION, AN EFFECTIVE INSTANCE IN GROUNDWATER RESOURCES SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT abstract
Recent anomalous population growth and intensive increase in water withdrawal from the aquifers in arid and semi-arid regions have caused severe groundwater level fall and making reservoir deficits in water tables. Resumption of this course in operation and management of water tables will inflict retrievable losses to the water tables and consequently their ravage. Hydro geological investigations on Birjand aquifer indicated that the falling trend of water table level has been aggravated and caused reservoir deficit is equal to 10.5 MCM per year. To reduce and compensate the reservoir deficits, the rehabilitation studies are done in aquifer. Consideration of different approaches of management such as; operation control, public participation and awareness (beneficiaries), amendment of formal rules, variation in irrigation method and increase in efficiency, artificial recharge, variation in crop and consumption patterns showed that by adoption of effective and optimized management of groundwater resources sustainable development can be achieved.
