Antibiotic susceptibility patterns of staphylococcus aureusin Mehr hospital, Mashhad, 2017-2018 abstract
Background: Antibiotic resistance of bacterial pathogens is a challenge associated with morbidity and mortality. The main concern with antibiotic resistance is that some bacteria have become resistant to almost all of the easily-available antibiotics. One such bacterium is S. aureus, which is an opportunistic pathogen often carried asymptomatically on the human body. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains have acquired a gene that makes them resistant to all beta-lactam antibiotics. Hospital-associated strains of this organism are serious nosocomial pathogens that have become resistant to most common antibiotics, making treatment challenging. The purpose of the following study is to evaluate antibiotic resistance of S. aureus infection in Mehr hospital in Mashhad, Iran Methods: From September 2017 to March 2018, 30 S. aureus isolates were identified from 214 clinical samples of blood, urine, wound and Broncho alveolar lavage (BAL). The samples were obtained from different wards at Mehr hospital. The bacterium was initially identified through colony morphology and biochemical testing in Mehr laboratory Hospital. Final identification and Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) testing were then carried out according to CLSI guidelines, using the BD Phoenix automated identification and susceptibility testing system to distinguish antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Saureus. Results: For the30 bacterial isolates, the following resistance patterns were observed: resistance percent to Cefoxitin or MRSA isolates was (39 %), Gentamicin (38%), Ciprofloxacin (44%), Trimethoperim- sulfamethoxazol (32%), Clondamycin (45%), Erythromycin (52%), Tetracycline (30%). All isolates were susceptible to Vancomycin and Linezolid. Conclusion: This study provides evidence foran increase in antibiotic resistance of S. aureus in Mehr hospital. Infection control strategies and additional measures are required to prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance. Vancomycin and linezolid can be offered to treat isolates such as MRSA, which are resistant to other antibiotics.
