NĀVDĀN abstract

Water is considered as a vital and valuable resource in arid and semi arid areas, Inhabitants of those areas work hard to find a permanent water resource. Although there is not much regular raining in these areas, but it plays an important role in the life of people there. Since climate is one of the most important factors of architectural designing in any region, buildings in arid areas are designed based on the scarcity of rain. The most common materials used in these buildings are brick and clay (adobe). Therefore, these buildings are vulnerable to heavy rain unless these materials are being used carefully. Otherwise rain turns to a threat for the buildings and their inhabitants, as it can damage adobe and brick in a short period of time easily. To avoid this problem, water disposal systems have been being used. In fact, nāvdān is a drain which disposes water from the roof of the building. This element can turn the mentioned threats to an opportunity in this region.
