Abstract:

The Buckling-Restrained Perforated Steel Plate Shear Walls (BRPSPSWs) are efficient lateral load-resisting systems into new and existing buildings. When in perforated steel panels a very short distance among holes is noticed, their effective deformation capacity could be limited. Therefore, a modified system based on the buckling prevention of PSPSWs can be proposed to improve their dissipative capacity. The novel lateral load-resisting systems consist of composite PSPSWs – timber panels devices, where the perforated steel plate is between two timber plates. In this work, aiming at showing the advantage of such devices, a FEM model of PSPSWs has been calibrated on the basis of literature experimental tests, where all tested specimens were subjected to monotonically increasing horizontal loading. Subsequently, a parametric FEM analysis on different series of buckling-restrained perforated panels, by changing the steel plate thickness and the gap distance timber panels and the perforated steel plate, has been carried out. Finally, the achieved FEM analysis results have been compared with those derived from the PSPSW systems in order to prove the effectiveness of timber panels, instead of reinforced concrete and reinforcing steel elements, in reducing or avoiding the buckling of perforated steel plates.
