Planning a City – Need of Social Services

Cities, quarters or neighbourhoods became more and more awareness to focus the social dimension of urban planning. 1994 in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) a special urban planning (sustainable development) programme was founded which supports districts to become more attractiveness for the inhabitants. This includes the need of social services that help people to develop a stabile and healthy lifestyle. This is the concept of Social City . Planning a city includes an organic structure of assistance for residents with individual troubles. In German Cities exists an institutional network offering assistance for different groups of the population. Meeting and Service Centres in quarters and neighbourhoods coordinate finding appropriate assistance and contact. Using the example of the City Hamm (Germany) the plan of assistance as part of a social city will be presented.
