Abstract:

As language teaching involves the acquisition of thousands of words, teachers and learners like to know how vocabulary learning can be fostered. This study tried to explore the effectiveness of elaboration tactics on Iranian EFL learners‚ vocabulary achievement. To fulfill the purpose of this study, 30 female students of Safir institute in Kangavar were selected from among a total number of 120 intermediate students. Based on the scores achieved on Oxford placement Test participants were assigned to an experimental group and a control group. The same content was taught (by the teachers/researchers) to both groups throughout the 12 sessions treatment. The only difference was that the experimental group was taught through elaboration techniques while the students in the control group underwent a non-elaboration approach. The results of the pretest and posttest in data analysis through statistical procedure of Independent pair T-test confirmed the superiority of the experimental group to the control group, resulting in the conclusion that elaboration tactic has a significant effect on improving Iranian EFL learners reading comprehension.
