Effect of gelation temperature on phase constituents and microstructure of nickel sulfide prepared by solution combustionsynthesis abstract

In this research nickel sulfide prepared by solution combustion synthesis using nickel nitrate and thiourea. The effect of gelation temperature (90, 110, 130 and 150°C) on combustion behavior, phase constituentsand microstructure was investigated by thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD)and FE-SEM techniques. Experiments indicate that combustion wave could be initiated only aftergelation at 90 and 110 °C and using higher gelation temperatures no ignition would be happened. Thermalanalysis results show exothermic reaction at 170-200°C in these samples. XRD results revealed that withincreasing the gelation temperature to 130°C, the combustion product changes from NiS2 to mixture ofNiS and NiS2 phases. With further increase in gelation temperature (150°C) the amount of formed NiSdecreases. FE-SEM micrographs reveal that increasing the gelation temperature causes formation ofsmaller particles.
