Electrophoretic deposition of titania nano-powders in butanol as a solvent: studying suspension stability, kineticks of deposition, microstructure and packing density of coatings abstract

in this study, the titania nano-structured coatings were prepared by electrophoretic deposition. Butanol and triethanolamine were used as solvent and dispersant, respectively. The optimum concentration of TEA in suspension was determined and mechanism of TEA action as dispersant was investigated. Effects of deposition voltage and TEA concentration on microstructure of coatings were investigated. It was found that in higher voltages, the average size of deposited particles increases and order of particles arrangement in deposit decreases. Also the microstructure of coatings deposited from suspension with optimum amount of TEA showed minimum amount of agglomeration. Weight and thickness of deposits were determined. The packing densities of deposited coatings at different voltages and times were calculated from deposits data. Results showed that at constant deposition voltage, the packing density curve vs. time has a maximum value, and this value increases with increasing deposition voltage. Also, at higher voltages, required time for reaching maximum packing density value is shorter.
