Abstract:

Phenol existence in liquid fuel has several undesirable environmental and operational consequences. In this study, the phenol adsorption from liquid fuel was investigated over goethite nanoporticles in kinetic experiments. Goethite was synthesized using iron (II) chloride tetra-hydrate and iron (III) nitrate nona-hydrate. The ultra sound waves were used to minimize the agglomeration of the nanoparticles. Specific surface area was about 129 m2 g-1 with the total pore volume and average pore volume of 0.169 mL g-1 and 26.242 Å, respectively. Maximum adsorption capacity of goethite was more than 430 mg g-1. Non-linear pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models were used to explain the kinetics of the adsorption process and to determine the order of rate constant. Results showed that the adsorption kinetic data were described well with a pseudo-second-order model and the chemisorption is dominant mechanism in this process.
