A Comparison between Effectiveness of Music Therapy and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy on Sleep Quality and Symptoms of Insomnia Disorder in Elderly Women abstract

Aim: Due to highly increasing insomnia disorder in elderly women, this study with the goal to show the effectiveness of music therapy or MAT and cognitive-behavioral therapy or CBT on overall sleep quality and the subscales on elderly women’s sleep quality, was conducted. Methods and Materials: The present study is an experimental one and the sample study consistsof 5000 female elderly members of Shiraz’s Jahandedhgan day care center as the sample population consisted of 57 women who were randomly selected while considering the entry and exit situations. Following the 10/53% fall, 51 elder with of age average 67/43 suffering from primary insomnia, were analyzed using PSQI scale in pre-tests, post-tests and the follow ups. The 4weeks intervention (twice a week) with proper music includingIntuitive music, happy music and energetic one for reducing evening anxiety and daily vitality were accomplished and the 4week intervention (twice a week) cognitive- behavioral intervention were conducted for the selected groups based on SPA instructions. The collected data were analyzed using statistical software SPSS 21 and multivariate analysis of covariance or MANCOVA and ANCOVA Findings:The mean in the overall sleep quality before the intervention in test group (1) and (2) and the control group were 13/32, 13/28 and 12/95 respectively, after the intervention in posttests the results were 7/53,10/13 and 13/82 and finally after 3month follow-ups the final results were 7/05,9/73 and 13/82. The mean difference in overall sleep quality after the intervention were significant at subscale of (P<0.001). Results: Based on this study’s findings, music therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy can attribute more in developing the overall sleep quality and reducing insomnia disorder symptoms in female elderly than the cognitive-behavior therapy
