Effect of social interventions on quality of life of Adolescent with Cancer: A Quasi-Experimental Study abstract
Background:Cancer is one of the most debilitating and complex diseases that despite the increasing survival rate in patients, has a great impact on the quality of life of individuals, especially adolescents, due to the many complications caused by diagnostic treatments and the nature of the disease itself that may affect emotional and psychological performance of the adolescents. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of social interventions on the quality of life of adolescents with cancer. Methods:The present study is a quasi-experimental study in which 73 adolescents with cancer diagnosis who referred to 17-Shahrivar Hospital in Rasht in 2018 were evaluated in two groups of control and intervention. In intervention group, social interventions (such as social support through periodic visits by physicians, counseling sessions with nurses, etc.) were provided for two months and the quality of life of both groups was measured before and after intervention. Data were collected by a two-part questionnaire including the socio-emotional and clinical factors related to the quality of life of adolescents with cancer and the Ped QOL
Cancer Module questionnaire. After collecting data and entering SPSS software version of 21, data were analyzed by descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) and inferential statistics (paired ttest and chi square test). Results: After analyzing the data, it was determined that before the intervention, the mean of overall quality of life scores was the same in the two groups and there was no significant difference. However, after intervention, the overall quality of life score in the intervention group was significantly higher than the control group (P <0.05).Conclusion:The results of this study indicate that social interventions can have a positive impact on the quality of life of adolescents with cancer. Therefore, it is recommended that by encouraging supportive networks to provide financial assistance and securing more in the socioeconomic context, the quality of life of adolescents with cancer is positively impacted
