Abstract:
inSTREAM (the individual-based Stream Trout Research and Environmental Assessment Model) is a simulation model that predicts how stream and river salmonid populations respond to many kinds of environmental and biological change. The simulated environment includes spatially and temporally varying in hydraulic conditions (depth, velocity and cover providing velocity shelter), temperature, turbidity, and food availability. Key individual behaviors include habitat selection, feeding and growth, mortality, and spawning. inSTREAM can be used as a powerful tool for management and restoration of riverine ecosystems. This paper summarizes the methods and capabilities of the modeling system and its application to research and management problems.
