Application of nano-structured polyaniline as a sorbent in solid-phase microextraction for the analysis of polychlorinated biphenyls in the sediments

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a convenient and solventless sample preparation technique that utilizes a thin polymer film coated on a fiber as an extraction phase. This technique combines sample clean-up and preconcentration into one step. In contrary to commercially available fibers for SPME, there are a high number of home-made coatings to be found in the literature. One promising alternative for the new coatings is the use of conductive polymers (i.e. polyaniline) as the extraction phases. The nano-structures increase the surface area and active interfacial sites for adsorption of analytes, thereby leading to more sensitive chemical measurements. The time required equilibrating the analyte between the extraction phase and sample matrix phase in SPME is dependent on the thickness of the coating. With increasing the coating thickness, equilibrium time and the amount of analyte extracted by SPME increases
