Numerical approach to select central frequency of ultrasonic probe in thickness measurement of pipe abstract

Ultrasonic thickness gauges are often used when the inspector accesses only one part of various products whose thickness needs to be determined such as pipe or tube, or where simple mechanical measurements are impossible or impractical due to section size or accessrestriction or something like this. Considering this application, specifying test equipment parameters like probe diameter, frequency, piezoelectric material, excitation voltage and so on would help the convenience of measuring the thickness. Since thickness is concernedhere, central frequency of ultrasonic transducer has crucial effect on measurement. In this article, 2-D solid mechanic simulation was carried out by FEM to investigate acceptable central frequency of ultrasonic transducer to measure thickness of circular sections. Theresults demonstrate that frequency increase cause to increase near filed area which is not sufficient for thickness measurement. Both near field and wave divergence angle should be at suitable value to have uniform echo pulse and determine thickness
