Abstract:

Soil reinforcement employing geosynthetics is significantly influenced by interactions. Increasing soil-geogrid interactions can be accomplished by enhancing friction at soil-reinforcement interface or increasing soil passive resistance. To investigate the influence of soil passive resistance anchors were attached to upper geogrid surface and for assessing the influence of friction sand particles were glued to these surfaces. Large-scale direct shear tests were conducted on renforced sand at relative density of 80%, subjected to normal pressures of 12.5, 25 and 50 kPa and sheared at a rate of 1 mm/min. Results show that both methods enhanced interactions at soil-reinforcement interface and passive soil resistance being much more effective than increasing friction at interface.
