Abstract:
Introduction: In the previous studies, the link between resting metabolic rate (RMR) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in obese people, and also the important role of adipokines in MetS are observed. Therefore, The researchers sought to test that possible mediatory effect of 3 adipokines: vaspin, retinol binding protein 4 and omentin-1 between resting metabolic rate (RMR) and MetS.Materials & Methods: We enrolled 263 obese and overweight women in this cross-sectional study. The participants were assessed for RMR by using indirect calorimetry and body composition by using the body composition analyzer also; biochemical measurements were quantified by the ELISA method. Results: Low level of RMR/kg was strongly associated with higher fat mass (P<0.0001), FFM (P=0.002), weight (P=0.006), BMI (P<0.0001), age (P=0.01), and hs-CRP (P=0.001). In fact, participants with RMR/kg < 20 kcal/24 h/kg were more obese (p < 0.05). Our results demonstrated that omentin-1 as an interrelated agent had a mediatory effect on the relationship between RMR and MetS (P=0.25, β=0.04), after a binary regression test. Nevertheless, other adipokines such as vaspin (P=0.06, β=0.32) and RBP4 (P=0.051, β= -0.28) did not affect the relationship between RMR and MetS.Conclusion: It seems, Omentin-1 as a mediatory agent in the RMR-MetS relationhip can have a significant mediating role.
