FREQUENCY OF COMORBIDITY OF PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS WITH METHAMPHETAMINE-INDUCED PSYCHOSIS

Abstract:

Background and Aim : One of the most common complications of methamphetamine use is methamphetamine--induced psychosis which has led to a significant part of the beds of psychiatric hospitals is allocated to patients with this disorder. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of psychiatric disorders with methamphetamine--induced psychosis.Methods : This research was a descriptive cross-sectional study .The statistical population included all patients with methamphetamine-induced psychosis due to taking methamphetamine during the years 2002to 2018 that they were first admitted to the Farabi hospital in Kermanshah and their medical records are available at the hospital archives. Sampling method was census. Demographic information and clinical records were extracted and collected from the patient s medical records and it was recorded in checklist designed by researcher beforehand. Descriptive statistics were used as frequency and percentage to determine the distribution of age group, gender, family history, comorbidity and other categorized variables. All analyzes were performed using SPSS20 statistical software.Results : From 251 patients with methamphetamine-induced psychosis, Their mean age of patients was 35.15 years, the first age of methamphetamine use was 133 (53%), the first age of psychosis was 115 (45.8%) between 21-30 years old and the duration of drug-induced psychosis % 29.9) was about 3-4 years after the first dose. 184 (73.3%) were between 1 to 5 times admitted due to methamphetamine-induced psychosis and more than half of the subjects had use of relapses and relapses from methamphetamine-induced psychosis 1 to 3 times. 154 (61.4%) had without comorbidity and Comorbidities of suicide, depression, schizophrenia and AIDS-induced cognitive impairment were reported30 (12.0%), 51(20.3), 2(0.8), 12(4.8) and 2(0.8) respectively.Conclusion : Regarding the high frequency of comorbidity of psychiatric disorders with methamphetamine-induced psychosis, the need for serious attention to the diagnosis, treatment and proper control of these disorders, Effective steps have been taken to further improve the treatment of these patients.
