Abstract:

Background and Aim : Human Papilloma virus (HPV) is responsible for more than 90% of cervical cancers worldwide. To avoid this, HPV screening has been included in the triage of women in the reproductive period. The aim of study was to find out the prevalence of HPV and its genotypes among outpatients who referred to Laleh hospital, Tehran. Methods : Methods. Different urogenital specimens were taken from outpatients who referred to genecology and obstetrician wards and clinic of Laleh hospital, Tehran. After viral DNA extraction, a multiplex real time PCR was carried out that could detect 12 HR as well as 2 low risks (6 and 11) HPV genotypes. Results : Of total 563 patients, 452 (80%) and 111 (20%) of patients were female and male, respectively. In both genders, the highest prevalence was found between age group of 31 and 40 years old. 253 (45%) out of 563 specimens were positive for at least one HPV genotype which were consisted of 200 (79%) and 53 (21%) of females and males, respectively. The rate of multiple genotypes was 149 (59%). 324 (71.8%) and 127 (28.2%) were positive for HR and low risk HPV genotypes, respectively. Distributions of HPV genotypes between genders in the order of magnitude were consisted of: females, 6, 16, 66 and 11; whereas in males were, 6, 11, 66 and 16. Genotypes 39, 33, 58 and 68 were seen only in females. Conclusion : Presence of high prevalence of HPV and its multiple distribution as well as unusual finding of certain genotypes heralds their prevalence among Iranian populations necessitate public health interventions. In addition, before starting ART cycle for infertile couple during genetic counselling must pay attention to HPV STD infection.
