The Effects of Using Animated Situational Comedy on Students Learning Grammar. abstract

Teaching grammar has always been a concern for teachers of foreign language. Recently, there have been remarkably significant developments in the field, effectiveness of using videos for language teaching purposes. This study utilized an English animated situational comedy (sitcom) as an authentic type of multimedia to teach grammar (simple present and simple past tense). In the present research two homogeneous groups of intermediate level of language learners from a secondary school in Ardebil were selected and instructed by the researcher (teacher) during five weeks of treatment. Participants divided into two groups of 20. During the study both groups were taught mentioned grammar items and related examples. The experimental group was exposed via animated sitcom and control group through traditional way. Two tests were administered to each group: the pretest and posttest. The data obtained through the pretest and posttest from the experimental and control group were submitted to a t-test to analyzing the results of the two different type of instruction. The posttest results showed that students who were exposed to animated sitcom, performed considerably better than the students who received traditional instruction. The findings of this study have implications for L2 learners and encourage them to change their view of grammar. Moreover, using these kinds of animation will have positive effect on learners’ motivation to learn grammar.
