The Effect of Code Switching on learning Conversation by Iranian Intermediate EFL learners abstract

This study investigated the effect of code switching on learning conversation by Iranian intermediate EFL learners. In order to reach this aim, an experimental method was designed for data collection. The researchers gave an OPT (Oxford Placement test) to homogenize the learners and out of 56 learners, a sample of 40 students were selected. They were randomly divided into experimental group who were allowed to use code switching to learn conversation and the control group who were asked to speak only English to learn the same conversation. They were pretested and post tested and the treatment lasted for eight sessions. The students scores were collected and submitted for data analysis. The result of t-tests (P < .05) showed that there is a significant difference between code switching based conversation learner group and the English based conversation learner group in the immediate and delayed posttests and the experimental group performed significantly better on the posttest of the conversation than the control group did.
