Abstract:
Poisoning with any of the colchicine and chloroquine drugs is rare and extremely lethal. These drugs exert therapeutic and toxic effects on tissues by different mechanisms. Colchicine is used to treat a number of rheumatologic diseases and some heart problems, and chloroquine is also used to treat malaria and some inflammatory diseases. There is a small gap between the therapeutic and toxic doses of these drugs. The patient poisoned with either of these medications may have gastrointestinal symptoms first, then multiple complications and multiple organ failure and sudden death. Patients treated with any of these drugs may initially suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms and complications and multi-organ failure and sudden death. Here we describe a case of concurrent poisoning with both drugs, in which the patient presented with a headache, nausea and vomiting several hours after suicide, and had a sudden cardiac death after 48 hours of supportive treatment.
