Abstract:
Background and Objective: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as a glucose intolerance of varying severity with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. Sleepdisturbances, especially extreme sleep duration, poor sleep quality and sleep-disordered breathing, are common during pregnancy. This study reviews the association between GDM and sleep disturbances. Search Method : This systematic review was performed to collect any literatures which assessed the relation between sleep disturbance and GDM. A systematic search in PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science was performed until June 2017. We excluded duplicates, animal studies, letter to editor, and review articles. Findings : Search yielded eight eligible studies. Six of included studies reported a direct association between sleep disturbance and incidence of GDM. However, two studies showed no significant relation. Conclusion : GDM was associated to sleep disturbance. Although conducted studies have several limitations, the importance of sleep quality in pregnant women has been addressed in all studies, especially regarding the prevention of GDM.
