Abstract:

Esophageal cancer is one of the most fetal cancers and Iran is an endemic area for it. Most common types of esophageal cancer are Squamaous cell carcinoma and Adenocarcinoma. Regarding the effect of Proto-oncogene HER-2/neu gene in prognosis and treatment planning of the cancer with anti-Her2neu drugs, like Herceptin, we conducted this study to determine the prevalence of this Proto oncogene in these two types of esophageal cancer in Kerman Afzalipour hospital. HER2 is a member of the human epidermal growth factor (HER/EGFR/ERBB) family. Amplification or over-expression of this oncogene has been shown to play an important role in the development and progression of certain aggressive types of cancer. Method Records of 103 patients with esophageal cancer who underwent surgery at the Afzalipoor hospital were selected. The tissue samples were evaluated by IHC sating for Her2 Neu staining. The variables that were evaluated included: of age, sex, extent of lymph node involvement, tumor differentiation and Her2 neu staining. Results: We studied, 57 men (22 person in adenocarcinoma group, 35 person in squamous cell carcinoma group) and 46 females (12 person in adenocarcinoma group, 34 person in squamous cell carcinoma group) . No significant relationship was seen between gender and type of the cancer in the two groups of squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. The mean age of patients in the SCC group was about 65/56 and 11/67 in adenocarcinoma group, which means the average age of people with adenocarcinoma was higher. The staining scores in esophageal carcinoma were 0 in 8 patients (8.7%),1+ in 25 (24.3%),2+ in 47(45.6%)and 3+ in 23(22.3%) patients. Her 2 neu expression in squamous cell carcinoma was observed to a greater extent than adenocarcinoma. , . There was a significant relationship between tumor stage and type of cancer of the esophagus. Patients with squamous cell cancer surgery were at higher stage Conclusion: Overall, the prevalence of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is greater than of adenocarcinoma and is associated with higher mean age. r.Her2 neu Glycoprotein expression in squamous cell carcinoma was observed to a greater extent than in adenocarcinoma. significant relationship was observed between tumor stage and type of the esophagus cancer. Patients with squamous cell cancer surgery were at higher stage. In the lymph node metastasis as well as the differentiation , there was no difference between squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma
