The nature of communicative competence ability has been the object of much theoretical discussions in the area of language teaching and testing. Celce Murcia (2007) defines objectives of language pedagogy in terms of linguistics, cultural anthropology, sociolinguistics, and other relevant areas of the social sciences and humanities (p.55). In order to achieve the main goals of language pedagogy, different models of communicative competence have been proposed. Regarding the importance of the need to have a good understanding of the issue, this essay intended to review some historical views of communicative language ability , different models of communicative competence and their implication in the area of language pedagogy. The review of models’ characteristics and their complications contributes to the development of our understanding of what we have to teach in order to enhance the communicative competence of second language learners and consequently their communicative performance
