Abstract:
Sustainable building design (SBD) deals with development of high performance buildings. To create high performance building through SBD, understanding of building process, behavior and attributes is the key to this objective. To perceive this theory, this paper presents a systematic approach towards SBD and building process. Toachieve more efficiency and functionality, this paper advocates the theories and frameworks which might be employedin development of sustainable building design through focusing on a WLC systematic approach. To clarify the theories presented, in the first stage, building system, its structure, dynamism and complexity are addressed and discussed. Based on such an acquisition, balance in/between building system and ecosystem is argued. Then, it is concluded that creation of balance in building system and with its contexts is attached to increase of performance. Finally, service life design (SLD) as a strategy in SBD is suggested; an appropriate solution enablingbuilding to improve performance attribute over whole life cycle (WLC). SLD attempts to create more efficient buildings, which are flexible in use, serviceable, maintainable while they are more durable and producing lower amount of disposal in end life stage. SLD also provides buildings with high performance and service life in use stage regarding factors such as cost, time, quality, safety and health. Development of SLD in SBD helps the building dynamic complex system to stabilize its components correlations both in the system and within the other contextual systems. Stabilization of components correlations and creating balance in building system reduces the need to change over building WLC. The outcome of such an approach would be enhancing durability, efficiency and performance attributes in building design.
