AN ANALYSIS OF MUNICIPAL TOOLS PROMOTING GREEN ROOF TECHNOLOGY INTO DENSE URBAN DEVELOPMENT

Nowadays global environmental trends such as climate change and population growth are increasing. Also local environmental problems , such as urban heat island effect , storm water management issues and building inefficiencies are critical and alarming. To prevent and ameliorate these problems , action must be taken on the local level . One action in response to these local problems is green roofs. This article presents a comprehensive examination of existing roof technology; function, design, construction , Planning and financing. Analysis includes a variety of regulatory tools and incentives for the promotion of green roofs in development so as to mitigate environmental concerns. Most notably storm water runoff problems, the urban heat island effect and building energy consumption. Peer-reviewed literature has thoroughly examined the positive externalities of green roofs. This article expands this knowledge by showing municipal planners how inclusionary green roof polices are a viable local response, both practically and economically , to larger, global environmental issues of concern.
