Abstract:

A high rate of packet loss is among the most critical issues that can even affect the high-speed networks. The issue affects the high loss-sensitive (HLS) services in several ways. Detection of a packet loss triggers the retransmission procedure which is known to be highly inefficient for handheld battery-operated devices as it increases the power consumption level of these devices. Retransmissions as the result of occurring the packet loss reduce the useful bandwidth utilization causing more problems for high bandwidth services. Moreover, it increases CPU utilization in order to process the extra network overhead. Utilizing a codec with a more efficient compression ratio is among the solutions to address the issues related to HLS real-time services. An efficient codec contributes to the reliability of packet delivery by assuring the least bandwidth requirements. For the sake of this work, we design and implement a simulation environment to compare the efficiency of two well-known codes, VP8 and VP9 for the video contents over the cellular long term evolution (LTE) and 802.11ac as the two common high-speed networks today. The results assist in determining the codec with more contribution to improve the packet delivery in cellular as well as wireless networks and provide the reliability they demand.
