Abstract:

Vocabulary is central to English language teaching because without sufficient vocabulary students cannot understandothers or express their own ideas. The purpose of the study was to compare the effect of picture and real instrument onvocabulary learning of Iranian EFL learners. The study is quasi-experimental with pretest, posttest and comparisongroups. Participants who took part in this research were all girls and boys 6-7 years’ old students from Rastanlanguage institute and school of Sufian (N=85) which among them, 70, 6-7 years’ old students from Rastan languageinstitute and school in Sufian were selected through non-probability convenience sampling method as sample size. Onehundred words from several beginner book's syllabuses which taught in most language institutes including Tiny Talkand First Friends were chosen and then vocabularies were taught through picture-based and real instrument-basedapproaches. In order to test the first and second hypotheses, paired-t test was used and to compare the two groups 'vocabulary learning and third hypothesis, an independent samples t-test was used. Results showed that teachingvocabularies by means of pictures and real instruments could improve students’ vocabulary learning and there was asignificant difference between teaching through pictures and teaching by real instruments scores. This study issignificant and beneficial both for teachers and learners because it will eliminate misunderstanding of learningEnglish.
