Abstract:
In diffusion combustion systems, fuel and oxidizer are admitted into the furnace in separate streams. In these systems, turbulent mixing of the oxidant (usually air) with fuel is typically the rate-limiting step of the combustion process. Making any changes to the burner design to enhance the mixing process can help to tailor the performance of the flame. So far researchers have developed and assessed a vast array of burner configurations to enhance the mixture formation. In the present study, a new swirl burner layout is introduced and compared with one of the most efficient swirl burners with radial fuel injection previously found by researchers. The presented burner layout has been chosen through examining many different injection typologies numerically, under isothermal conditions. Numerical results are validated against the experimental data available for the velocity profiles and reasonable agreement is observed. Unmixedness index is defined and used to judge the performance of the burners. According to the results, the new burner layout is more efficient at improving the mixing process compared to the standard swirl burner, in almost the whole chamber volume.
