Evaluating Comparative effect of 2% and 4% Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L) extract ointment on wound healing in adult male rabbits

The main purpose of current study was to evaluate the effect of Rosemary essential oil ointment onwound healing in male adult rabbits. To this the 24 male adult rabbits were randomly divided into 3experimental groups. Experimental wound was induced on the anterior-dorsal side of each rabbits. Treatmentswere as a group 1 served as control and received basal formulation ointment. The groups 2 and 3 received 2and 4 percentage of Rosemary essential oil. To determine the wound healing activity as a closure percentagewas examined on days 4, 8 and 16 post-operation. The number of fibroblast and macrophages, collagendeposition and neovascularization were assessed on 2, 4, 8, 16 days after wound incision. Data showed thatthe wound area significantly decreased in Rosemary ointment treated groups compared to control groupon days 4, 8 and 16 post operation (P≤0.05). Data already showed that the using of Rosemary ointmentincreased fibroblast significantly and macrophages distribution and up-regulated the new vessels formationand collagen deposition on days 2, 4, 8, 16 after wound induction (P<0.05). In conclusion we could note thaton 4th day post wounding, neutrophils highly infiltration than control and on 8th day the neutropil infiltrationhighly in control than in treated wounds. Additionally the infiltration become mild on 16th day in controlwounds but completely disappeared in treated wounds with rosemary essential oil extract ointment. We mayalso suggest that Rosemary essential oil ointment may useful for wound healing in male adult rabbits.
