Evaluate the effect of Cirsium vulgare and Aloysia citrodora derived extracts on cutaneous lesions healing in Holstein heifers

In the current study the thirty heifers from the Holstein cattle by average age, 15 months and averageweight of 250–300 kg were used to evaluate cutaneous lesions healing. An experimental wound excisionmodel in bovines was created by means of a skin punch of diameter 2cm. The heifers were topically treatedfor 17 days with a saline control or decoctions of mixed with Cirsium vulgare and Aloysia citrodoraderived extracts with carboxymethyl cellulose. The centripetal retraction, clinical, and histological aspectsof the heifers wounds were evaluated until complete process. The treatments were beneficial to theimprovement process. The phytotherapeutics agent present in Aloysia citrodora and Cirsium vulgarederived extracts exhibited positive effects in the inflammatory phase and on the improvement process. Theherbal extract exhibited a positive effect on the macroscopic aspect of cutaneous lesions in cattle onlyduring the first treatment days. Data showed that both Aloysia citrodora and Cirsium vulgare extractsimproved fibroplasia. Phytotherapeutic activity of Aloysia citrodora was the most superior, and they can beused in topical treatment of cutaneous lesions in Holstein heifers.
