Design of Space Structures Directed by Desirability Factors abstract

The process of design should incorporate the two-fold aspects of the rules of structural design and the personal preferences of the designer. Considering one aspect alone, may lead to designs that do not satisfy human needs. The rules of structural design are based on structural mechanics and are well established. However, there is no well defined method of dealing with the features of design that are dependent on the personal view and preferences of the designer. The goal of the paper is to provide a strategy to allow the preferences of a designer to be combined with the normal processes of design and, effectively, allow the subjective desires of a designer to have a role in the objective computational processes of structural design. This is achieved through the concept of desirability factor
