Abstract:

Quantifying the impacts of human-induced activities and natural phenomena on hydrology mainly on water yield is crucial for sustainable development. Through this study, we focused on how the accuracy and efficiency of the electronic stream gauge can be affected by the flow sediments. To that end, we analyzed the efficiency of stream gauges in terms of two recently happened precipitation events at the Heris Paired Catchments. Results revealed that there is no concern about the recording of the stage at both basins in terms of ascending flows. It doesn't mean that the gauges are able to capture all the ascending flows. While in the case of descending flows there seen serious challenges where approximately the gauges were not able to capture the stage because of high sedimentation at the inlet of flume where the floater is connected to the water. However, the gauge was able to capture the low value for descending flow as well. Determining the threshold level for the descending flows as well as the flows that can be completely recorded is needed more flow regimes. This way we showed that the volume of the surface runoff which basin yield under a distinct precipitation event was not precisely accountable because of some missing data in descending flows. According to the results, only the volume of low flows which will not able to block the inlet of the valve can be calculated.
