Abstract:

Background and Aim : Increasing bacterial resistance against antibiotics, used in urinary tract infection (UTI) is an emerging problem for human health. This study amied to investigate the antibacterial effect of the Inola aspira extract on bacteria isolated from urinary tract infections. Methods : In this cross-sectional study, ۵۰ samples were collected from patients with urinary tract infections referring to a medical diagnostic laboratory in Mashhad, Iran. Then bacteria were confirmed by standard biochemical tests. The antibacterial effect of the Inola aspira extract was investigated by the using microdilution method, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of bacterial growth was determined. Results : Out of ۵۰ samples of urinary tract infections, Escherichia coli was the most frequent strain ۲۱(۴۲%), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae ۱۰ (۲۰%), Staphylococcus aureus ۸ (۱۶%), Enterobacter spp. ۷ (۱۴%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa ۲ (۴%), and Enterococcus spp. ۲ (۴%). The Inola aspira extract demonstrated its highest antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter spp., Enterococcus spp. with a MIC of ۵۰ mg/ml. On the other hand, the lowest antimicrobial activity of the Inola aspira extract was reported to be against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae with MIC ۱۰۰ mg/ml.Conclusion : The result suggests that extract of Inola aspira can be used as a source of cheap and accessible replacing chemical drugs to treat some bacterial infections.
