SOME OF THE RESULTS OF EARTHQUAKE FOCAL MECHANISM INVESTIGATIONS ON THE TERRITORY OF ARMENIA

The present work describes the results of the earthquake focal mechanism investigations on the territory of Armenia. The calculations are done through the programme made by S. Yunga, the Institute of the Earth's Physics Russian Acagamy of Sciences. The focal mechanisms of ۱۶ earthquakes, Occured in ۱۹۹۲ are determined. The kinds of faulting in the earthquake foci are analysed in detail. The focal mechanisms are determined confidentally based on the first arrival of P and S waves from short period recordings and are compared with assumed rupture disturbances in the Earth's crusl.The strong earthquake focal mechanisms are mainly determined by the regional stress field. A predominant near-meridional direction of compression stress axes are observed which may be explained by the situation of the Armenian Upland in the collision zone of the Arabian and Eurasian plates.
