Abstract:
More than one decade ago, the international seismological community began installing modern, state-of-the-art seismographic recording systems on a global scale. A truly international initiative, the Federation of Digital Broadband Seismographic Networks (FDSN) coordinates activities between nearly twenty national organizations deploying broadband seismographic instrumentation. The FDSN coordinates activities in the areas of seismic station siting, data exchange and software development. In the United States, the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) was formed in ۱۹۸۳. IRIS is a consortium of approximately ۹۰ universities in the United States that support research in seismology. IRIS consists of ۴ major programs, ۱) the Global Seismographic Network (GSN) consisting of ۱۱۰ permanent stations recording continuous data, ۲) the Program for Array Seismic Studies of the Continental Lithosphere (PASSCAL) that develops portable seismic recording systems used in temporary deployments, ۳) the Education and Outreach (E&O) program that develops materials to educate students and the general public about seismology, and ۴) the Data Management System (DMS) that receives data from the data generating sections of IRIS and the FDSN and makes these data available to anyone
