Abstract:
The Canadian geotechnical engineering community performed a major collaborative research project entitled the Canadian Liquefaction Experiment (CANLEX) The main objective of the project was to study the phenomenon of soil liquefaction, which can occur in saturated sandy soils and is characterized by a large loss in strength and stiffness, resulting in failure or substantial deformations. This paper presents a concise summary of some aspects of this research project, including the project objectives, major achievements, results, and conclusions. Six journal papers, submitted to the Canadian Geotechnical Journal, describe different aspects of the project. Valuable experiences gained during performance of the CANLEX project can be used in similar collaborative research projects around the World.
