Abstract:

It is widely accepted that inter-areaoscillations maybe deteriorate the power systemcondition. These oscillations are due to the dynamics ofinter-area power transfer in a large interconnected powernetwork, which can severely limit the systemperformance. To provide a safe operation for powersystem stability, damping of these oscillations havebecome one of the main problems. In this paper, a fuzzylogic controller is developed for a Doubly-Fed InductionGenerator (DFIG) based wind farm in order to damp theinter-area oscillations. It is the first attempt thatimplements the role of DFIG on overall system transientstability beside of its common duty on power system.The auxiliary fuzzy damping controller modulates thereactive power in rotor side converter to accomplish thebest damping of oscillations. In order to validate theclaims the well-known two-area four-machine powersystem aggregated with DFIG is simulated usingMATLAB/Simulink. Simulation results disclose that, theDFIG enhanced with fuzzy damping controller is morerobust and effective for damping the electromechanicaloscillations. Also a comparison between proposedcontroller and conventional PI controller is performedthat exhibits the superior performance of Fuzzy logiccontroller toward its conventional PI controller.
