Abstract:

Drought and salinity stress are the main abiotic factors limiting crop production. climate change has already caused a significant increase in the frequency and intensity of drought events that result in increasing land desertification and salinization. Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L., ۲n = ۲x = ۲۲) is one of the most important food legumes worldwide. Understanding the genetic control against stresses is interesting in the development of new cultivars. The present study is aimed to determine the effects of salinity stress on seedling development of common bean, a preliminary stage to the study of its inheritance. For this purpose, thirteen genotypes of common bean were salt-stressed to evaluate the effects of salinity stress on morphological and physiological traits in greenhouse conditions. In the saline condition, chlorophyll content, plant height, leaf area, the number of leaves, and shoot weight were decreased. The result showed genotypes A۱۹۵, X۲۷۷۶ and SEA۵ exhibited the best response considering the traits of plant height and number of leaves, while the genotypes A۲۸۰۶ and Sanilac were susceptible to salinity stress. The observed variation offers the possibility of investigating the inheritance of the response to this stress.
