Abstract:

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimated in its report – “The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World ۲۰۱۹” - that ۸۲۰ million people in the world were still hungry in ۲۰۱۸. Provision of food in a sustainable and environmentally committed manner for this challenging demand, without threatening natural resources, requires that agricultural production increases significantly and that postharvest handling and food manufacturing systems become more efficient requiring lower energy expenditure, a decrease in postharvest losses, less waste generation and food with longer shelf life. In fact, ensuring safe and nutritious food for all is arguably one of the key public health challenges of our time; because, the safety of the food we consume directly influences our health.Delivering high quality foodstuffs should become a research priority for food and nutrition science, so that combining the existing knowledge base with future strategic research could have a relevant impact on improving human health. That’s why I decided to gather this review article.
