Abstract:

The main objective of this research is to evaluate the ceramic membrane to on-site greywater treatment to produce high-quality recycled water. Therefore, the Mullite membrane was fabricated by the extrusion technique using kaolin powder and characterized as ceramic Microfiltration (MF) membranes. Field emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) analysis of prepared Mullite ceramic membrane showed that the membrane is composed of large particles and has a rough surface with large pores from a surface view. XRD pattern of mullite membrane sintered at ۱,۲۵۰ °C shown that the kaolin transformed to the Mullite phase and free silica. Investigate of porosity, shrinkage and mechanical strength showed that the mullite membrane sintered at ۱,۲۵۰ °C had porosities of ۳۲.۲ %, radial and longitudinal shrinkages of ۵.۷% and ۴.۷%, and flexural stress of ۱۸.۵ MPa, respectively. The results of treatment indicated that the Mullite membrane was able to remove chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total sulfate, total nitrate, phosphate, and detergent by ۷۳.۲%, ۶۷.۰%, ۶۳.۶%, ۶۶.۷%, ۶۹.۲%, and ۲۲.۳%.
