Abstract:
Plastics have been one of the highly valued materials and it plays a significant role in human's life such as in food packaging and biomedical applications (۱). Bioplastic materials can gradually work as a substitute for various materials based on fossil oil. The issue like sustainability and environmental challenges which occur due to manufacturing and disposal of synthetic plastics can be conquering by bio-based plastics (۲). In the present study, extracted chitosan solution mixed with glycerol ۲% to produce edible films. The antimicrobial property of edible film was evaluated against bacterial food-borne pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli O۱۵۷:H۷). The Minimum Inhibitory/Bactericidal Concentration (MIC/MBC) values of the edible film did not differ between gram negative and positive bacteria. S. aureus, B. subtilis, S. typhimurium and E. coli O۱۵۷:H۷ had similar sensitivity to the edible film, L. monocytogenes and B. cereus showed more sensitivity.
