Synthesis of well define d polymer nanocom posite by polymeri cally mod ified silica

New o rganically- modified clay that contains an oligo meric styrene has been p repared and used to produce nanoc omposites of poly Styrene. Intercal ated nanocomposites and, in some cases, exfoliated or mixe d intercalated/exfoliate d nanocomposites of all of these polymers have been produced by solu tion method. The use of the styrene-contain ing clay permits the direct blending of the clay with polystyrene, w ithout the u sual need for maleation, to produc e the nanocomposites. The systems have all been characte rized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electr on microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis. These novel new c lays open new opportunities for solution bl ending of polymers with clays to obtain nan ocomposites with important properties.
