Abstract:

Two approaches are widely used for building energy performance estimation and assessment: simplified calculation (e.g., ISO ۱۳۷۹۰) and dynamic simulation (e.g., EnergyPlus). In the ISO ۱۳۷۹۰ standard, simple algebraic equations are used, while in the dynamic simulation main focus is on the transient behavior of systems and buildings. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the model accuracy in different climates of Iran. For this purpose, an institutional building was selected and modeled using ISO ۱۳۷۹۰ and EnergyPlus ۹.۲.۰. The analysis was done by comparing the results from the ISO ۱۳۷۹۰:۲۰۰۸ standard with the dynamic simulation model in EnergyPlus software. Peak cooling demands of buildings in three different climates and four different building orientations have been calculated and compared using these two methods. The differences between the two methods in the cooling energy demands are up to ۵۵% for cold climate, up to ۴۵% for the mild climate, and up to ۳۸% for hot climate. It is concluded that the simplified approach may be acceptable in some cases.
