Physical, Psychological, and Nutritional Considerations in Wheelchair Basketball: A Review of the Literature abstract
The goal of this article is evaluate the benefits, potential risks, nutritional considerations, and competitive aspects of wheelchair basketball (WB), as well as to consider the efficacy of wheelchair basketball as a source for improvement in psychosocial parameters for those with disabilities. Participating in WB has been shown to increase self-confidence, well-being, and positive attitudes toward disability, in addition to providing an excellent venue for physical activity for athletes involved. Likewise, WB training can help alleviate onset of negative mood states, particularly depression and anger. Despite these benefits, WB players face a variety of potential risks, particularly with regards to muscle and tendinous injuries of the shoulder. The information provided in this study can be used by coaches and athletes alike to adapt and improve their training and nutrition programs and minimize risks associated with WB to enhance performance and enjoyment in the sport.
