Clinical efficacy of Neomycin Sulfate 20% against broiler colibacillosis abstract
Escherichia coli is the cause of colibacillosis in poultry, which imposes heavy losses to the poultry industry and is one of the main reasons for the use of antibiotics in poultry flocks. Neomycin Sulfate is a bactericidal and broad-spectrum compound from the family of aminoglycoside antibiotics. This antibiotic is especially effective on some types of Enterobacteriaceae family such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of two commercial Neomycin Sulfate 20% against colibacillosis in broiler chickens. A broiler farm in Zarand Saveh area with two houses was selected and 8200 one-day-old chicks were placed in each house. Management and nutritional conditions and all health and vaccination programs were the same in both houses. After observing the mortalities and signs of the colibacillosis in the middle of the 4th week, samples were taken and sent to the laboratory for bacterial isolation and antibiogram testing. Based on the moderate sensitivity of Escherichia coli isolates recovered from colibacillosis lesions to Neomycin Sulfate as reported by laboratory, the chickens of the house 1 were treated with a oral solution of Neomycin Sulfate 20% provided from Kimia Roshd Co. (Gorgan, Iran) in drinking water at a ratio of 1:1000 for five days at the age 28-32 days. Similarly, birds in house 2 received the oral solution of Neomycin Sulfate 20% provided from Kimiafam Co. (Tehran, Iran). Among the losses observed during the trial period, a number of birds were dissected, and the relevant observations and losses were recorded in both houses. Sixty birds from each house from days 1-49 were weighed at weekly interval. Food consumption and the FCR were calculated at the end of the production period in both houses. The results of all aforementioned parameters in both houses were compared and analyzed with appropriate statistical methods. The loss rate in house 1 (12.3%) was lower than house 2 (13.1%). Average weight gain and FCR at the end of the experiment were not significantly different in the two houses. Based on the results of this study, there was no specific difference in performance between two commercial Neomycin Sulfate 20% oral solutions and both antibiotics can be used in poultry flocks against colibacillosis, when required.
