Aerodynamic Design of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine UsingRISØ-A1 Airfoil Family abstract

In order to reduce pollution and environmentalprotection, the technology of wind-power electricity generationhas received much attention; Therefore, any solution andsuggestion in order to improve efficiency and power as well asreduce losses in wind turbines (as the primary tool for using oldand inexhaustible wind energy), can be considered important. Thisresearch has done the aerodynamic design of 200 kW horizontalaxis wind turbine blades using the blade element momentum(BEM) method. Selecting a suitable airfoil is the first step indetermining the blade geometry. Geometric parameters andaerodynamic coefficients for three different airfoils, includingRISØ-A1-24, RISØ-A1-21, and RISØ-A1-18, have beeninvestigated. Comparing these three airfoils showed that RISØ-A1-18 airfoil has the highest power coefficient while RISØ-A1-21has lower manufacturing costs.
