Detecting Shoreline and Surface Water changes of Caspian Seaalong the Gorgan Bay Using Multitemporal Landsat Data abstract

This study aims to monitor the surface area changes of Gorgan Bay in the period 2000-2020using multitemporal Landsat TM 2000, TM 2008, OLI 2014, and OLI 2020 data.Furthermore, displacement of the Caspian Sea shoreline in the area of Gorgan Bay betweenthe years 2000 and 2020 was investigated. In this respect, the normalized difference waterindex (NDWI) technique and visual interpretation were employed. The results indicated anintense decreasing trend in Gorgan Bay surface area between the years 2000 and 2020,where the bay lost about 143 km2 of its surface area in this period. In addition, the resultsrevealed that the most shoreline displacement was occurred around the eastern part of thestudy area and between the years 2008 and 2014. The study concluded that more attentionis required by the decision makers in the study area to preserve Gorban Bay and CaspianSea against more drying.
