Abstract:

This study aims to monitor the surface area changes of Gorgan Bay in the period ۲۰۰۰-۲۰۲۰using multitemporal Landsat TM ۲۰۰۰, TM ۲۰۰۸, OLI ۲۰۱۴, and OLI ۲۰۲۰ data.Furthermore, displacement of the Caspian Sea shoreline in the area of Gorgan Bay betweenthe years ۲۰۰۰ and ۲۰۲۰ was investigated. In this respect, the normalized difference waterindex (NDWI) technique and visual interpretation were employed. The results indicated anintense decreasing trend in Gorgan Bay surface area between the years ۲۰۰۰ and ۲۰۲۰,where the bay lost about ۱۴۳ km۲ of its surface area in this period. In addition, the resultsrevealed that the most shoreline displacement was occurred around the eastern part of thestudy area and between the years ۲۰۰۸ and ۲۰۱۴. The study concluded that more attentionis required by the decision makers in the study area to preserve Gorban Bay and CaspianSea against more drying.
