Reduction of Saliva and Serum ۲۵-Hydroxycholecalciferol in Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract:
Methods:The prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) is high in patients suffering from ۲۵-hydroxyvitamin D۳ [۲۵(OH)D] deficiency. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible association of saliva and serum ۲۵(OH)D concentrations with MS in women. Methods: Serum and saliva ۲۵(OH)D levels of ۳۰ MS women and ۳۰ matched healthy controls in this case-control study were measured by ELISA. Data were analyzed by unpaired two-tailed student’s t-test, Pearson correlation test and Receiver operating characteristic (ROC). Results: The mean levels of ۲۵(OH)D in serum and in both stimulated and unstimulated saliva were significantly lower in patients with MS. Serum levels of ۲۵(OH) significantly correlated with stimulated (r = ۰.۵۷۵; P=۰.۰۰۳) and unstimulated saliva (r = ۰.۵۴۸; P=۰.۰۰۴). The mean (±SD) EDSS was ۳.۶±۱.۹ in the MS group. EDSS was not significantly correlated with ۲۵(OH)D in serum or in stimulated and unstimulated saliva. The cut-off points of ۲۵(OH)D in serum and saliva were ۱۸ ng/ml and ۶۵ pg/ml, respectively. Conclusions:۲۵(OH)D level in saliva like in serum was low in MS women. Serum ۲۵(OH)D levels correlated positively with saliva ۲۵(OH)D in women suffering from MS.
