Abstract:
Wind driven ventilation including single-sided and double-sided is an effective technique in order to enhance indoor air velocity in naturally ventilated buildings. Whilst the difference of indoor and outdoor temperature is trivial in tropical regions, it is assumed that wind driven ventilation by Transom could be a relevant technique as it works based on the pressure difference between inlet and outlet. A unit is selected for the purpose of field experiment and numerical simulation. Full-scale experimental test is carried out in order to evaluate the performance of single-sided ventilation in a base case unit. CFD numerical simulation is conducted subsequently in order to examine the performance of applied Transom ventilation panel and also to compare the indoor air velocity value between single-sided and double-sided ventilation techniques. FloEFD developed by the mentor graphics is selected in this study for the sake of prediction of indoor air velocity magnitude and pattern in the selected unit. The results of study show that the average of air velocity ratio in ten selected points in the field measurement and CFD simulation for double-sided ventilation is almost two times more than single-sided ventilation. Furthermore, calculation of air change per hour (ACH) indicates that the ACH in the unit equipped by double-sided ventilation is ۲۹ ACH whereas this amount is ۱۵ ACH in the single-sided ventilated unit. Indeed, the IAQ could be achieved effectively by application of Transom ventilation panel in current and future development of common high-rise residential buildings.
